Four Differentiated Formats:

1. Read, Make & Trace with handwriting lines
Students read the word, build it and trace it using handwriting lines.

2. Read, Make & Trace without handwriting lines
Students read the word, build it and trace letters without handwriting lines.

3. Read, Make & Write in a blank space
Students read the word, build it and write it independently in an open space.

4. Read, Make & Write with handwriting lines
Students read the word, build it and print it independently on handwriting lines.
Each format is included in both colour and black-and-white.

Short A: cat, hat, bat (baseball bat and animal bat), rat, cab, nab, dab, lab, mad, bad, sad, pad, jam, ram, yam, dam, can, van, ran, ban, cap, yap, gap, map

Short E: bed, wed, red, led, pen, den, men, hen, jet, net, set, wet

Short I: pig, fig, big, rig, bin, fin, tin, win, lip, rip, dip, zip, sit, hit, pit, lit

Short O: sob, rob, job, fob, cop, hop, pop, bop, pot, hot, jot, cot

Short U: sub, rub, tub, cub, rug, tug, pug, mug, bun, sun, nun, run

Some less-common CVC words, such as nab, bop and ban, are intentionally included with picture support to help students develop vocabulary while practising short-vowel word patterns.

How to use:

✔ Laminate the mats and use them with magnetic letters, letter tiles and dry-erase markers
✔ Print the mats on copy paper and build the words with alphabet stamps
✔ Place the mats in reusable sleeves for repeated practice
✔ Print a tracing format and independent-writing format double-sided for easy differentiation
✔ Select specific word-family mats for targeted small-group instruction

Magnetic letters, letter tiles, alphabet stamps and dry-erase markers are not included.
