How I Teach 2D Shapes in Kindergarten: 9 Lessons + Hands-On Centres
2D shapes are one of the first math topics I like to teach in Kindergarten. Many students arrive already able to name a circle, square or triangle, so it gives them an early opportunity to feel successful. But our learning goes well beyond memorizing shape names!
Throughout this unit, students learn to identify, sort and compare common 2D shapes, notice shapes in the world and in structures, describe their attributes, and explore how shapes can be put together and taken apart.
I teach these ideas through nine short, sequenced lessons. After each lesson, students continue exploring the same concepts through centres, small-group activities and play. Here is a closer look at how the unit unfolds in my classroom.
Lesson 1: Introducing 2D Shapes
We begin by introducing our new math topic and talking about what students already know about 2D shapes. To introduce the topic, I like to show them a short 2D shape video. My favourite is “Here are the 2D Shapes That I Know” by Harry Kindergarten, but if you are looking for a free video, I also like “Shapes Song for Kids” by The Singing Walrus.
After we watch the video, we begin a class anchor chart with three sections:
- the shape visual and name
- its attributes
- real-life examples
We do not complete the whole chart on the first day. It grows across several lessons as students learn more. Keeping the chart visible gives students a meaningful reference they can return to during discussions, centres and independent work.
At this point I also introduce the words 2D shape, circle, triangle, square and rectangle and add the word cards to our math wall. Additional shape names are added gradually so students are not expected to learn everything at once.
Lesson 2: Learning and Practising Shape Names
On the second day, we focus more closely on identifying and naming common 2D shapes. I introduce the rest of the shape word cards and model how students can use the visual and written labels as a reference.
Then I introduce our Trace the Room activity. Before the lesson, I tape shape cards around the classroom. Students take a clipboard and recording sheet, find each card, say the shape name and trace or record the matching shape.
This gets students moving while giving them repeated practice connecting the shape, its name and its printed label. The resource includes different recording options, so students can trace the shapes or write the shape names depending on what is developmentally appropriate for them.
💡 Tip: I like to print the Trace the Room and Write the Room recording sheets double-sided so each clipboard already has both options. Students can easily flip to the side that best fits their current printing ability.
Lesson 3: Finding 2D Shapes in Real Life
Once students are becoming familiar with the shape names, we begin looking for those shapes in everyday objects.
I like to read or watch The Wing on a Flea by Ed Emberley and ask students to watch for the shapes hidden in the illustrations. Then we add some of their real-life examples to our anchor chart.
It is important to talk about the difference between an object and the 2D shape we notice on its surface. A door is not literally a rectangle, but the flat face of a door may look like a rectangle. In Kindergarten I keep this language simple and focus on helping students notice and describe the shapes they see around them.
Real-photo posters are especially helpful here because students can see that the same shape appears in many different objects. They also make useful references on a math wall or at a centre.
Students can continue practising this idea during centre time with clip cards. They look at each real-life photograph and clip the 2D shape that best matches it. The clothespins make the activity easy for students to complete independently while adding fine-motor practice.
Lesson 4: Exploring Sides and Vertices
Next, we introduce the words sides and vertices. These ideas can be tricky for young learners, so I make them as concrete as possible.
We build shapes using straws and small balls of play dough. The straws represent the sides and the play dough balls connect the sides at the vertices. As we build, we touch and count each side and vertex together.
Then we return to the anchor chart and add the attributes of the shapes we have learned. We might record that a triangle has three straight sides and three vertices, while a square has four straight sides that are the same length and four vertices.
I leave the straws and play dough available as a centre so students can continue building and comparing shapes.
After introducing sides and vertices you can introduce the sides and vertices option of this mini book so students who choose to can complete and practice this concept during centre time. These also work well after assessments as a small group intervention activity for the students who need it!
Lesson 5: Finding 2D Shapes in Structures
After students have had practice with shape names and attributes, we look for 2D shapes in structures.
I build a simple structure with blocks and model how to examine it from different viewpoints. Students identify the 2D shapes they can see on the flat faces and use shape word cards or a recording sheet to document their ideas.
Then students build their own structures and look for shapes within them. Questions such as these help extend the conversation:
- What 2D shapes do you see in your structure?
- Where do you see a rectangle?
- Do you notice the same shapes when you look from another side?
- Can you build something that includes a triangle, square or rectangle?
This lesson connects shape learning to construction and play while addressing the Ontario Kindergarten expectation that students identify 2D shapes in structures they have made.
Lesson 6: Composing and Decomposing Shapes
Next, we explore how shapes can be put together to make other shapes and broken apart into smaller shapes.
I like to read Perfect Square by Michael Hall and then demonstrate how a square can be cut into two triangles or two rectangles. We rearrange the pieces and talk about what new shapes or pictures we can create.
Students can then cut or tear a paper square and use all the pieces to make their own picture. This gives them a playful, open-ended way to investigate how shapes can be decomposed and composed in different ways.

During centres, students can continue the same thinking with composing-shape cards, pattern blocks or tangram pieces. The goal is not for every child to create one specific answer. It is to notice that shapes can be combined, separated and rearranged.
Lesson 7: Sorting Shapes
By this point, students know several shape names and attributes, so we use that knowledge to sort shapes.
I begin with a triangle/not a triangle sort. I intentionally include triangles in different sizes and orientations so students learn that a triangle does not always have to look like the most familiar “point at the top” example.
As students sort, I ask them to explain their thinking:
- Why does this shape belong with the triangles?
- How do you know this one is not a triangle?
- Does turning the shape change what it is?
- What attribute did you use to sort?
Later, students can sort by another rule, such as shapes with and without four sides or shapes with straight and curved lines.
Lesson 8: Co-Creating Real-Life Shape Posters
For this lesson, we return to the idea of shapes in the world around us and co-create large reference posters.
I prepare large construction-paper shapes and collect small, disposable objects and pictures. We sort a few examples together, and then small groups of students help finish each poster during centre time. Students may add packaging, classroom materials, magazine pictures or paper shapes that match each category.
I also invite students to help write the labels. Creating these reference posters gives students ownership of the display and an authentic opportunity to use their growing shape vocabulary.
The completed posters become classroom references that reflect the students’ own observations and thinking.
Lesson 9: Comparing 2D Shapes
We finish the unit by comparing shapes and describing what is the same and different about them.
I might hold up a square and a triangle and ask:
- What is the same about these shapes?
- What is different?
- How many sides and vertices does each shape have?
- Are the sides straight or curved?
- Are any sides the same length?
We record students’ ideas and refer back to our anchor chart. At this stage, I am listening for more than shape names. I want students to use attributes to explain how they know what a shape is and how it is related to another shape.
2D Shape Centres for Continued Practice
The nine lessons provide the explicit teaching, but students need many opportunities to revisit the ideas through play and hands-on practice. I start introducing 2D shape centres slowly when we start formal lessons on them and then continue to offer them throughout the year for review and additional practice.
Here are a few of the centres I use throughout the unit and the year.
Play Dough and Loose-Parts Shape Mats
Students form the shape with play dough, pony beads or other small loose parts. The real-life examples on the mats support shape recognition and give students more vocabulary to discuss.
Shape Roads
Students drive a small toy car around each shape road. I encourage them to say the shape name and notice whether the road is curved or made from straight sides and vertices. These shape roads are also a playful way to introduce and re-inforce shape formation.
2D Shape Bingo
Bingo gives students repeated practice identifying shapes and works well with a small group, volunteer, big buddy or supply teacher. To extend the activity, I describe the attributes rather than always calling the shape name.
Roll, Find and Cover
Students roll a shape cube, find the matching shape and cover or trace it. There are versions with simple shape images and real-life examples, so the same familiar routine can reinforce two related skills.
Shape Dabber or Sticker Sheets
Students fill the outline with bingo dabbers, dot stickers, stamps or loose parts and then trace the shape name. These sheets are easy to adjust based on the materials you already have available.
A Simple Progression for Teaching 2D Shapes
The order of the lessons is intentional. Students move from recognizing and naming shapes toward thinking about their attributes and relationships:
- Introduce familiar 2D shapes.
- Practise identifying and naming shapes.
- Connect shapes to real-life examples.
- Explore sides and vertices.
- Identify shapes in structures.
- Compose and decompose shapes.
- Sort shapes by their attributes.
- Co-create real-life shape references.
- Compare and describe shapes.
Each lesson includes a short period of explicit instruction followed by opportunities to practise, investigate and apply the learning through centres and play. This structure helps students build the vocabulary they need while still giving them plenty of time to explore shapes in meaningful ways.
