Kinder Read Alouds: Remembrance Day | FREE Kindergarten Lesson Plans (Ontario)

Planning Remembrance Day activities for Kindergarten? This FREE resource includes 5 read aloud lesson plans about Remembrance Day and peace, plus discussion questions, anchor chart materials and optional writing activities to make your November planning easier.

Help students learn about poppies, veterans and the moment of silence while exploring what peace means and how they can be peacemakers. Along the way, students practise recalling information from non-fiction texts, making text-to-self connections and using new vocabulary.

What’s Included:

  • 5 read aloud lesson plans with before- and after-reading prompts and discussion questions
  • Anchor chart samples to guide your classroom discussions
  • Printable anchor chart headings, questions and response cards, including colour and black-and-white options
  • “Peace is…” and “I can be a peacemaker by…” writing pages
  • Writing page options with sentence starters and open-ended writing space
  • A sample writing centre set-up

Books used in the lessons:

  • A Poppy Is to Remember by Heather Patterson — Lessons 1–2: recalling information about Remembrance Day
  • Can You Say Peace? by Karen Katz — Lesson 3: making connections and exploring the word “peace” in different languages
  • The Peace Book by Todd Parr — Lessons 4–5: sharing ideas about peace and being a peacemaker

The books are not included. You only need the book for the lesson you choose to teach. Check your school or public library for copies!

Flexible options for your classroom:

Use all five lessons or choose the ones that fit your students, available books and schedule. Lessons can be spread across shorter whole-group sessions, and responses can stay oral.

The optional writing pages work well for guided writing, a literacy centre or a follow-up activity with a supply teacher.

Please note:

This resource was created for an Ontario Kindergarten classroom and uses Canadian spelling. The Remembrance Day lessons focus on the Canadian observance of November 11.
