Teaching Sorting in Kindergarten: Hands-On Lessons and Centre Ideas

Sorting is an important early math skill that helps Kindergarten students notice attributes, identify similarities and differences, and organize objects and information.

Under the 2026 Ontario Kindergarten curriculum, children are working towards sorting objects or data using one attribute. They are also expected to sort common two-dimensional shapes, including circles, hexagons, rhombuses and trapezoids.

When I introduce sorting, I begin with explicit whole-group lessons using familiar materials. Then, as students become more confident, I provide open-ended opportunities for them to choose their own sorting rule, organize the objects and explain their thinking.

Here are some of my favourite hands-on lessons and centres for teaching sorting in Kindergarten!

What Does It Mean to Sort?

I introduce our learning goal:

We are learning to sort.

Then we discuss what sorting means:

Sorting means putting things into groups following a rule.

I model looking carefully at the attributes of an object. Depending on the materials, students might notice its:

  • Colour
  • Shape
  • Size
  • Texture
  • Type
  • Number of holes
  • Straight or curved lines

At first, I provide the sorting rule. Later, students choose their own rule and explain how they sorted the objects.

Day 1: Sorting by Colour

We begin by sorting objects by colour. I place a collection of colourful objects in the middle of the carpet and use hoops to create the groups.

As we sort, I model the language I want students to use:

  • “These objects belong together because they are red.”
  • “My sorting rule is colour.”
  • “This object does not belong in this group because it is blue.”

After the whole-group lesson, I set out sorting mats so students have the opportunity to practise independently using counting bears.

Day 2: Sorting by Shape

Next, we explore sorting by shape. Pattern blocks, attribute blocks, buttons or other shape manipulatives all work well for this lesson.

Before sorting, we look closely at each shape and discuss its attributes. Then we place shapes that belong together in the same group.

This lesson also helps reinforce the names and attributes of common two-dimensional shapes.

These sorting mats provide helpful visual support while students are learning to identify and sort shapes. Once students are ready, I also offer open-ended sorting experiences without labelled categories.

Day 3: Sorting by Size

On the third day, we sort objects by size. I like using counting bears because students can compare small, medium and large objects while keeping the type of object consistent.

We talk about the importance of comparing objects carefully. Students may need to place two objects beside each other before deciding which size group they belong in.

Day 4: Exploring Different Sorting Rules

Once students understand sorting by colour, shape and size, we discuss other ways objects can be sorted.

Sort It Out Book

I like to read Sort It Out! by Barbara Mariconda and notice the different rules Packy uses to organize his collection. We then examine classroom materials and brainstorm possible sorting rules.

For example, magnetic letters can be sorted by:

  • Uppercase and lowercase
  • Letters with holes and letters without holes
  • Letters made with straight lines, curved lines or both
  • Letters and numbers

I also introduce this centre where students sort using their own sorting rules. I purposely gather a variety of materials that can be sorted in multiple ways so I can observe and document the different ways the students show their thinking.

Day 5: Why Do We Sort?

Once students have had several opportunities to sort, we discuss why sorting is useful.

We might notice that:

  • Classroom materials are sorted into bins so we can find them easily.
  • Books can be organized by topic, author or type.
  • Groceries are organized into sections at the store.
  • Laundry can be sorted by colour, owner or type.
  • Toys can be sorted to make cleanup easier.

This conversation helps students understand that sorting is not just a school activity. It is a practical skill we use to organize objects and information.

Day 6: Sorting Living and Non-Living Things

The 2026 Ontario Kindergarten curriculum includes a specific expectation in Strand B: B13.1 sort and classify groups of living and non-living things. I like to introduce this expectation during our sorting unit!

We read What’s Alive? by Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld and discuss some of the characteristics of living things. Living things grow and change and need things such as air, water and food.

Then we sort photographs, picture cards or small figurines into living and non-living groups.

As students sort, I ask them to explain their decisions:

  • “Why do you think this belongs in the living group?”
  • “What do the objects in this group have in common?”
  • “Is there a card you are unsure about?”
  • “What evidence could help us decide?”

These conversations are often more valuable than completing the sort perfectly because they reveal how students are thinking.

After introducing sorting through short whole-group lessons, I add hands-on sorting activities to our math centres.

1. Sorting Counting Bears

Counting bears can be sorted by colour or size. Labelled mats provide additional support for students who are still learning how to organize the objects into groups.

Students can also sort the bears using one rule, mix them up and then sort the same collection in a different way.

2. Sorting Shapes

Students sort pattern blocks or other shape manipulatives using labelled shape mats.

Encourage students to name each shape and explain how they know where it belongs. This makes the activity about noticing attributes rather than simply matching an object to a picture.

3. Sorting Letters

Students look closely at magnetic letters and sort them by an observable attribute.

You can begin with a specific rule, such as letters with holes and letters without holes. Later, invite students to create their own sorting rule.

4. Sorting Living and Non-Living Things

Students sort picture cards or small objects into living and non-living groups. A magnetic tray or cookie sheet helps keep the pieces contained and creates an inviting centre setup.

5. Open-Ended Loose-Parts Sorting

Once students are familiar with sorting, I begin offering collections without predetermined categories.

Buttons, pom-poms, gems, beads, natural materials and other loose parts work well. Students decide how to sort the collection and then use a sentence strip to name their rule.

Open-ended sorting gives children an opportunity to make their own mathematical decisions. Instead of following a rule chosen by the teacher, students examine the materials, select an attribute and organize the objects accordingly.

Students may sort one collection in several valid ways. For example, pom-poms might be sorted by colour, size, texture or whether they are sparkly. Adding cups and tongs or tweezers can add fine motor development opportunities as well.

6. Recording and Representing a Sort

Students can document their sorting using a recording sheet or by attaching objects to cardstock.

Sentence cards support students in communicating their sorting rule, even if they are not able to write it on their own yet.

Representing a completed sort with sentence cards gives students another way to communicate their mathematical thinking. These examples show objects sorted by colour and size. Students can also explain their work orally while an educator records their thinking.

7. Sorting Cars by Colour

For another fun way to practise sorting by colour, add a collection of toy cars to these road mats! Students look closely at each car’s colour and “park” it on the corresponding road.

This is an easy, hands-on sorting centre to set up, especially if you already have toy cars in your classroom. It also gives students a meaningful reason to use sorting vocabulary as they explain where each car belongs.

As students work, you can ask:

  • What is your sorting rule?
  • How are the cars on this road alike?
  • Where does this car belong? How do you know?
  • Are there any cars that are tricky to sort?

Questions to Ask While Students Sort

Purposeful questions can help move students beyond simply placing objects on a mat:

  • What do you notice about these objects?
  • What is your sorting rule?
  • How are the objects in this group alike?
  • How are the groups different?
  • Where would this object belong? How do you know?
  • Could you sort this collection another way?
  • Which object was difficult to place?
  • What would happen if we changed the sorting rule?

These conversations help students describe attributes, justify their decisions and develop mathematical vocabulary.

Assessing Sorting in Kindergarten

Sorting activities provide many opportunities for observation and conversation.

I look for whether a student can:

  • Identify an observable attribute
  • Sort objects consistently using one attribute
  • State or describe the sorting rule
  • Explain why an object belongs in a particular group
  • Sort the same collection in another way
  • Sort common two-dimensional shapes

Photos, anecdotal notes and completed representations can all be used to document learning.

After the unit, I like to sit down with each student for a quick one-on-one assessment. I give students 10 counting bears (at least 2 different colours and sizes) and ask them to sort the bears. Then I ask them to tell me how they have sorted their collection. This gives me insight on who can and cannot organize their materials, sort by an attribute and name their sorting rule.
