Help beginning readers look closely at every letter in a CVC word with these engaging Blend & Clip cards!

These cards were designed for students who identify the first letter of a word and then guess instead of reading through the entire word. Each card presents one CVC word and three similar picture choices. Students segment and blend the word, examine the beginning, medial and ending sounds, and clip the matching picture.

The carefully selected picture choices encourage students to notice small differences between look-alike CVC words, such as bat, bag and bug or pan, pen and pat.

This low-prep phonics activity combines CVC decoding, visual discrimination and fine motor practice in one reusable literacy centre.

How to use:

Students:

1. Look at the CVC word.
2. Say each sound.
3. Blend the sounds to read the word.
4. Examine all three picture choices.
5. Clip the picture that matches the word.

To prepare, print the cards, cut them apart and laminate them for repeated use. Set the cards out with clothespins or other small clips.

Clothespins are not included.
