Give your Kindergarten students an engaging, hands-on way to practise beginning sounds, letter-sound correspondence and CVC word blending!

In this Mystery CVC Words literacy centre, students identify the beginning sound of three picture clues, place the corresponding letter on each picture and blend the three sounds to decode a CVC word. They then find the matching target picture and place it in the box beside the puzzle.

The activity includes 40 short-vowel CVC words and is provided in both colour and black-and-white formats.

How to use:

1. Select a Mystery CVC Words mat and the five matching target-picture cards.
2. Students name the three picture clues in the first puzzle.
3. They identify the beginning sound of each picture and place the corresponding magnetic or printable letter on top.
4. Students blend the three sounds to decode the mystery CVC word.
5. They find the matching target-picture card and place it in the box beside the puzzle.
6. Repeat with the remaining four puzzles.

For an additional tactile element, place the mats on cookie sheets and attach magnets to the back of the target-picture cards. Students can build the words with magnetic letters or use the included printable letter cards.
