Turn CVC word practice into a fun, hands-on literacy centre with toy cars!

Students drive a toy car slowly across the blending dots as they say each letter sound. Then they return to the beginning, drive quickly across the word and blend the sounds together. After decoding the word, they park the car beside the matching picture on the parking lot mat.

This CVC word activity includes individual short-vowel sets and two mixed-vowel sets, making it easy to differentiate as students develop their decoding skills.

How to play:

Students select a CVC word card and place a toy car at the beginning of the road. They slowly drive across the blending dots while saying each sound. Then they return to the beginning and drive across the word more quickly to blend the sounds together.

Once they have decoded the word, students find the corresponding picture and park their car in the matching space.

Preparation:

Print the word cards and your preferred version of each corresponding parking lot mat. Cut out and laminate the materials for repeated use. Add toy cars and the centre is ready for students to play!

The full-colour mats use more ink, so several colour and ink-saving options are included. Choose the version that works best for your classroom.
