Help Grade 1 students learn and practise heart words using a simple, consistent phonics-based routine!

These Grade 1 heart word practice sheets guide students through saying the word, tapping its phonemes, identifying the irregular part, tracing the word and writing it independently.

The 82 words follow the order in which heart words are introduced throughout UFLI Foundations lessons 35–110. Two complete versions are included: one with handwriting lines and one without, making it easy to select the format that best supports each student.

The predictable one-page format works well before reading a decodable text, during small-group instruction, as part of a literacy centre or for additional practice at school or home.

Each Practice Sheet Includes:

❤️ Say It – Students identify and say the focus word.
❤️ Tap It – Students say and tap each phoneme, then colour or dab the corresponding dots.
❤️ Heart It – Students underline the phonemes and place a heart beneath the irregular part of the word.
❤️ Trace It – Students trace the focus word several times.
❤️ Write It – Students write the heart word independently.

Students can draw hearts or use heart stickers, stamps or marked sticker dots during the Heart It step.
