Looking for a hands-on way to practise blending words with ck, sh, ch and th?

Digraph Blend & Park turns decoding practice into a parking lot literacy centre! Students drive a toy car along each word card, say the sounds, blend the word and park beside the matching picture.

This low-prep activity is designed for Kindergarten and Grade 1 students who are ready to read words with digraphs. Use it during literacy centres, small-group instruction or targeted decoding practice.

How to play:

1. Choose a word card and a toy car.
2. Drive along the road while saying each sound—for example, /sh/ /i/ /p/.
3. Return to the beginning and blend the word: “ship!”
4. Park the car in the matching picture space.

Model the routine and introduce the picture vocabulary before students practise independently.
