Winter Dressing Chart & Song for Kindergarten | Visual Routine

Help your Kindergarten students learn what to put on first, what comes next, and how to get ready for outdoor play more independently!

This Winter Dressing Chart and Song gives children a visual reference for putting on their winter clothing. Use the included photo cards or add photos of your students’ own outdoor gear to co-create a dressing chart with your class.

Please note: Only the picture cards for the “Getting Ready to Go Outside” chart can be customized by adding your own images in PowerPoint. The clothing labels, song lyrics, and other PDF text are not editable.

What’s Included:

  • Two Winter Dressing Song posters sung to the tune of “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes,” with a choice of hat before scarf or scarf before hat
  • Winter clothing photo cards for snow pants, boots, coat, hat, scarf, and mittens
  • PowerPoint photo-card templates to add pictures of your students’ own winter clothing
  • “Getting Ready to Go Outside” chart headings, including ready-to-print and tracing options
  • Two cut-and-paste song worksheets with clothing pictures to sequence, matching the two song versions
  • An educator guide explaining how to introduce the song and co-create your chart

How to use it:

Introduce the winter dressing song during a whole-group lesson, pointing to the pictures as you sing together.

Then invite students to help build your classroom chart! Gather examples of their winter clothing, photograph each item, and add the photos to the PowerPoint picture-card templates. Students can also help create or trace the chart heading.

Display the finished chart near your cubbies so children can refer to it while getting dressed. When someone asks, “What do I do first?” you can guide them back to the pictures and support them in finding their next step.

Use the cut-and-paste worksheet as a centre or small-group activity, then send it home so families can practise the same song and dressing sequence.

Supports:

  • Independence with classroom self-care routines
  • Sequencing and winter clothing vocabulary
  • Following a familiar routine with visual support
  • Student participation in creating classroom reference materials
  • Winter dressing practice at school and home
