Cover Options:
The formation-arrow cover provides additional guidance for students learning how to form each letter. The bubble-letter cover is a flexible alternative if you teach a different letter-formation style.
Letter-Formation Options:
✔ Trace uppercase and lowercase letters without handwriting lines
✔ Trace and independently print letters without handwriting lines
✔ Trace letters using handwriting lines
✔ Trace and independently print letters using handwriting lines
The options without handwriting lines can feel less visually overwhelming for younger learners, while the lined versions provide additional support as students develop conventional printing skills.
Letter Identification:
Choose between two visual-discrimination activities:
Similar-looking letters are included as distractors, encouraging students to examine each letter carefully.
Letter-Sound Reading:
Each mini book includes three reading pages. Students point beneath the focus letter, say its sound and identify the corresponding picture.
These pages provide repeated practice with:
✔ Connecting uppercase and lowercase letters with their sounds
✔ Tracking print from left to right
✔ Identifying words containing the focus sound
✔ Building beginning-sound vocabulary
✔ Developing confidence with early reading routines
Beginning-Sound Sort:
Students cut, sort and glue pictures according to their beginning sounds. This activity provides additional practice with sound isolation while strengthening cutting and gluing skills.
Skills Practised:
Perfect for:
✔ Literacy centres
✔ Small-group instruction
✔ Alphabet intervention
✔ Guided literacy groups
✔ Assessment follow-up
✔ Independent alphabet practice
✔ Beginning-of-the-year activities

How to prepare:
Select the cover and activity options that best meet your students’ needs. Print the chosen pages, cut each sheet in half, place the pages in order and staple them together.
Because two identical mini-book pages are included on each printed sheet, one set of printed pages makes two student books.
Please note:
The Xx mini book uses words containing the /ks/ sound at the end of the word.
UFLI is referenced only to describe the organizational order of the second PDF. This resource is not affiliated with or endorsed by UFLI.
