CVC Build & Check | Self-Checking CVC Word-Building Mats

Give students hands-on practice segmenting, encoding and spelling short-vowel CVC words with these differentiated, self-checking word-building mats!

Students identify each picture, say the word, segment its beginning, medial and ending sounds, and build it using magnetic letters or letter tiles. They then remove the checkmark cover to reveal the word and check their spelling independently.

Two levels of difficulty make it easy to support beginning learners and gradually build independence. Use the mats during literacy centres, morning tubs, small-group phonics instruction or CVC intervention.

Two Differentiated Levels:

1. Supported CVC Word Building

Students identify two picture-supported CVC words. The six letters needed to build both words are provided at the bottom of the mat, reducing the number of letters students need to search through.

Students can collect the required magnetic letters before beginning, build each word and uncover the answers to check their spelling.

2. Independent CVC Word Building

Students identify and build three picture-supported CVC words without a provided letter bank. This format offers a greater challenge and encourages students to apply their sound-segmentation and letter-sound knowledge independently.

How to prepare the centre:

Print and laminate the mats and checkmark covers. Place a checkmark over each word in the “Check It” column using a removable fastener, such as a magnetic dot or hook-and-loop dot.

For a tactile centre, place the mat on a cookie sheet and use magnetic letters to build the words. The magnetic pieces help keep the mat and answer covers in place as students work.

Magnetic letters, cookie sheets and magnetic dots are not included.
