CVC Word Reading & Matching Mats | Decode, Find & Match Phonics Centre

Help your Kindergarten students practise decoding and blending CVC words with this hands-on read-and-match phonics centre!

Students sound out a printed CVC word, blend the sounds, find the matching picture card and place it in the box above the word. The activity includes 108 short-vowel CVC words across nine mats, with picture cards in both colour and black-and-white.

Place the picture cards in a sensory bin for an engaging search-and-find activity or set them out on a table for simple, low-prep word-matching practice.

How to use:

1. Print and laminate the CVC mats and picture cards.
2. Select one mat and its 12 matching picture cards.
3. Place the picture cards on a table or hide them in a sensory bin.
4. Students sound out and blend each printed CVC word.
5. They find the corresponding picture and place it in the box above the word.
6. Repeat until all 12 words have been matched.

Add hook-and-loop (velcro) dots to the mats and picture cards to keep the matches securely in place.

For an additional challenge, combine picture cards from multiple mats so students must search through a larger selection.

Sensory-bin materials and hook-and-loop dots are not included.
