Measurement for Kindergarten: Lessons, Centres & Activities | Length, Area, Mass & Capacity

Teach measurement in Kindergarten with hands-on lessons and centres that help children explore length, area, mass, and capacity using concrete materials.

This unit includes 18 days of explicit lesson plans, printable math centres, vocabulary cards, and optional recording sheets. Children compare name trains, cover surfaces with square tiles, test objects on a balance scale, and investigate what different containers can hold.

Use the activities during whole-group lessons, small-group instruction, and math centres to support play-based, inquiry-based learning.

Updated to support the 2026 Ontario Kindergarten Measurement expectations (A10), including new area lessons and a centre, revised capacity lessons, and additional capacity investigations.

Prep & Materials

Print the activities you want to use and laminate reusable mats and task cards as needed. Add classroom materials such as:

• Linking cubes, counting bears, paper clips, or other non-standard measuring tools
• Square tiles and flat surfaces for comparing area
• A balance scale and objects or manipulatives for comparing mass
• Cups, containers, a small scoop or cup, and water, sand, or beans for exploring capacity
• Play dough for making and comparing snakes

Hands-on materials are not included. Most activities are low-prep and can be reused year after year.

Recording sheets are optional. Children can also share their thinking through conversation, demonstrations, drawings, and educator observations.

2026 Ontario Curriculum Note

This unit supports A10.1: describing different ways objects can be measured and A10.2: comparing length, area, mass, and capacity using concrete materials.

The 2026 curriculum no longer explicitly mentions measuring with repeated non-standard units. These activities remain in the unit as hands-on explorations that also offer practice with counting and one-to-one correspondence. When documenting measurement learning, the focus is on children’s ability to describe and compare measurable attributes.

Area lessons and a centre are now included. Temperature activities have been removed from the updated unit.
